Forty-nine scientists earned the title of UP Scientist for 2016-2018, and six artists and art scholars, the title UP Artist for 2015-2017, for productivity in their fields. The awarding ceremony was held on July 26, 2016 at the NISMED Auditorium, UP Diliman, Quezon City.

Walking through rice paddies in a colorful wide-brimmed hat and folded up jeans, it would be difficult to miss Senen Escamos. The sureness of her step betrays her near-30 years of experience in the field. And gazing at the scene from afar, one can sense something of great importance being studied here. Dr.  Aliño is a faculty member of the UP Marine Science Institute. He specializes in coral reef ecology, community ecology and management, chemical ecology and ecological modeling. He has a doctorate in marine chemical ecology from the James Cook University in Queensland and was recently named outstanding alumnus of the same university.

New Scientists of the Philippine Scientific Career System

On 13 March 2013, seventeen (17) qualified full time researchers from the University of the Philippines were conferred Scientist Rank under the Scientific Career System (NCS).
The recognition of non-faculty research personnel from State Universities and Colleges is one of the Program’s initiatives to help harness the research capabilities of and at the same time establish a system of reward and recognition to researchers in academic institutions.
