A Filipino scientist blasts Supreme Court justices for ruling against GMO field trials, debunking claims they’re not safe
“No consensus on safety,” says the headline as news outlets reported yesterday that the Supreme Court has banned field trials for Bt talong, a GMO eggplant developed to resist pests.
I have no words. But as a scientist and as a plant biologist, I have to speak up.
There is clear consensus! Ask the various national academies of science around the world, or the various independent scientific professional societies. They have concluded that GMO technology is safe.

In local college basketball, the bonfire normally signifies a huge accomplishment, like the end of a long, arduous and fruitful journey to winning a championship.
The bonfire that lit up the night sky from the Sunken Garden at University of the Philippines-Diliman on Saturday, August 9 was meant for something far from a title, but something just as significant – a win that marked the end of a long, painful drought from a 27-game losing streak in 720 days.

It has been 16 years since I took the University of the Philippines College Admission Test (UPCAT).
I grew up in Vigan City oblivious to what UP can do to change lives. I didn’t have big dreams then. My answer when my parents asked me where I wanted to study after high school was, “Anywhere but here.”
I was frustrated with my high school experience. I wanted a better education and I always felt I didn’t belong to a small town.
Days before the UPCAT application deadline, I was asked by our guidance councilor if I wanted to take advantage …
