Chinese embassy scholars, profs experience China winter camp

Select students and professors from three Philippine universities participated in the one-week in-depth Winter Camp in China hosted by the Embassy of the People’s Republic of China to the Philippines.
“We aim to promote understanding and collaboration among people,” said China Education Association for International Exchange’s (CEAIE) representative Shen Xuesong during the welcoming banquet for the Filipino delegates.
This is also the goal of the said camp participated by 18 students and three professors from the University of the Philippines, Diliman (UPD), Bicol University (BU) and Philippine Normal University (PNU).

UP researchers among ‘Philippines Promising Star’ awardees

Nine researchers from the University of the Philippines were among twelve who were recognized in The Philippines Promising Star Awards 2016. The awardees were chosen for their research works in broad fields of studies which cover social science, computer science, clinical medicine, plant and animal science, neuroscience and behavior, economics and business, molecular biology and genetics, materials science, and environment and ecology.

Philippine Cities Need to be Learning and Resilient

UP Assistant Vice President for Public Affairs, Assistant Professor Ranjit Rye and UP Vice President for Public Affairs, Professor Prospero De Vera at the University of Glasgow, Scotland.
In an era of climate change and disasters, local governments in developing countries need to be both “learning cities” and “resilient cities”.
This was the assessment presented by UP Professors Prospero de Vera and Ranjit Rye in their paper entitled “E-resilience for Disaster Risk Management in a Developing State: the Philippine Case” during the 13th PASCAL International Conference on Learning Cities held at the University of Glasgow recently.

Shell Philippines Donates Professorial Chair in Environmental Engineering

On the morning of August 12, 2015, representatives from the University of the Philippines (UP Diliman) and Pilipinas Shell Petroleum Corporation gathered in UP Diliman’s Quezon Hall to mark the latter’s donation of a professorial chair worth P3 million to the UP College of Engineering.
The professorial chair was named in honor of First Philippine Holdings Corporation Chairman Emeritus Oscar M. Lopez, who was highly regarded by all present as both an industry leader and a champion of environmental conservation. Mr. Lopez, who was conferred an honorary Doctors of Law degree by UP in 2012, was present at the ceremony.

Nora Aunor adds U.P. Gawad Plaridel to long list of awards

Nora Aunor will be the 10th recipient of the U.P. Gawad Plaridel on August 27.
The U.P. Gawad Plaridel is the highest award given by the University of the Philippines to an outstanding media practitioner. In the case of Aunor, she is cited for her excellence in film and television.
Getting an award is not new for Aunor. As regards television and film industry awards in the Philippines, she received 52 from 1968 to 2012 as actor, producer and host.

University of the Philippines President Visits Midwest

The University of the Philippines President Alfredo E. Pascual visited the Midwest where he and his wife were guests of the UP Alumni Association of Wisconsin 40th Anniversary Celebrations in Milwaukee on July 13 as well as during the dinner of the UP Alumni Association of Greater Chicago in Rosemont, IL on 16 July.
In both occasions, Dr. Pascual gave a report on the status of UP for the benefit of the alumni.  The UPAA in Wisconsin donated a check amounting to $3,600 to Dr. Pascual as a testament to their continued support for their Alma Mater.  He accepted it on …
