A total of 23 research projects were presented to the public at the 2016 Research Symposium of the Office of the Vice President for Academic Affairs (OVPAA) held on November 28, 2016 at the National Institute of Physics, National Science Complex, UP Diliman.

UP Manila prof is world’s most prolific editor

Dr. Jose Florencio Lapeña, Jr. of UP Manila is the world’s busiest editor.
This was according to Publons, the UK company behind the inaugural Sentinel of Science awards.
Lapeña received the award for handling the highest number of manuscripts across all the world’s journals. As this year’s top contributing editor, he will get $100 cash and a $200 credit with Wiley.
Publon created the awards to “honour the expert peer reviewers and editors who stand guard over research quality, and lead the charge for better, faster science.”

UP figures in Times Higher Education rankings

Expanding its coverage, the Times Higher Education (THE) World University Rankings now includes institutions from 10 more countries for 2016-2017, including one from the Philippines, its national university, the University of the Philippines.
In its communication to UP, THE said UP ranked “in the band of >800 this year out of 980 institutions” from 79 countries. UP got its highest scores in knowledge transfer and lowest in research influence.

PH and US researchers: Luzon hosts highest concentration of unique mammals

Two UP Biology researchers were part of the US–Philippine team which undertook the 15 year study that showed 93% of Luzon Island’s land mammals are found nowhere else

Five from UP faculty named to Duterte cabinet

President Rodrigo Duterte’s Cabinet when he starts his term of office on June 30, 2016 will include five experts from the University of the Philippines faculty.
Included in the list of future Cabinet secretaries which Duterte presented to the press in Davao City on May 31, 2016 were the names of Leonor Briones for the Department of Education, Fortunato Dela Peña for the Department of Science and Technology, Benjamin Diokno for the Department of Budget and Management, Ernesto Pernia for the National Economic Development Authority, and Judy Taguiwalo for the Department of Social Welfare and Development.

Memorandum PAEP No. 16-18: Internet Bandwidth Updates

In line with eUP’s thrust to upgrade hardware and infrastructure of the University, I am glad to inform you that over 7800 Mbps of additional bandwidth have been provisioned to the entire UP System. Additional bandwidth has been activated on 01 April 2016 with the following allocations per CU:
This additional bandwidth of 7850Mbps is on top of the existing bandwidth of 1237 Mbps, for a new bandwidth more than seven (7) times the present.

UP faculty urged to register with Google Scholar

In a memorandum issued recently, Vice President for Academic Affairs Gisela P. Concepcion encouraged faculty members to register and create their Google Scholar profile “so that the current list of UP scientists with citations could be updated and corrected in future editions of the Cybermetrics Lab ranking.”
Last month, Cybermetrics Lab has announced the list of top 250 scientists in Philippine institutions. One hundred sixteen (116) of those who landed on the list are affiliated with UP, with UP Manila-based scientists occupying the top spots.

Good news for students interested in taking the UPCAT in August of this year: You can now file your application online! For the first time in UP’s history, the eligibility, documentary and procedural requirements of the University of the Philippines College Admission Test are now available via The UPCAT Online Application website (https://upcatonline.up.edu.ph/).
